南戏中的“贴”,原意为旦之外又贴一旦,早期既可扮演年轻女子,又可扮演老年女子,在南戏中早期专门扮演老年女性的有贴、净或丑,而净可能更早于贴。由于剧文的发展,老年女性被要求行为端庄,表演以咏唱为主,逐渐出现了“夫”(夫人)。明嘉靖隆庆年间,出于戏曲情节的需要,“老旦”与“贴”混标并存,到了万历年间,“老旦”盛行,“贴”则专门扮演“旦”以外的年轻女性了。
