专业外语在辅助专业教学中有三大功能:工具、桥梁、海洋,专业外语的教学应体现出相应的教学目标和教学特点。通过专业外语与专业基础知识相结合的学习达到专外词汇掌握是专外教学的初级目标;通过中西比较学习、国外前沿研究介绍达到专业综合能力的提高是专外学习的高级目标;通过自主选择阅读、自主学习达到熟练利用专业外语读写、研究是专外教学的终极目标。相应地专外教师的角色有:组织-讲授者、计划-教材开发者、激励-指导者。
