When I retired from the White House in 1980, Rosalindine and I faced the rest of my life. We were in their prime, all in their fifties, but none of them worked. We returned directly to our home in Plainstone, Georgia, from the White House. I do not want to run for office again, so we started to think about how to take advantage of some of the skills and experiences we have gained over the years to solve the issues that are always important to us. The first year we have been meditating, in the process created the idea of establishing a Carter Center. We envision this as a non-profit center that does not belong to any government nor to any political party. Here, we can pool our financial, material and human resources to promote peace around the world and improve the health of people all over the world. In 1983, we founded the Carter Center on the Emory University campus and moved to permanent in 1986
