On the night of March 7, 1980, the Madagascar Tanio tanker, carrying 26,000 tons of medium-grade fuel oil, was torpedoed by two violent waves as it crossed the western part of the English Channel. At Brittany, France, Northwest Coast crashes. The 7500 tons of oil carried on the stern of the “Tanne” were towed to the French coast, while more than 10,000 tons of oil in the bow sank in 87 meters of seawater 17.3 km from the coast. Fifteen months after the accident, most of the oil that sank on the seabed was extracted, but some 8,700 tons of oil still spread to the marine environment immediately after the oil tanker crash. Driven by the winds and tides, the oil reached the coast of Brittany five days later, contaminating the 200-km coast and causing serious damage to seawater, intertidal and coastal sediments. Known for its abundance of pink granite, this coastal area is a tourist destination, with offshore aquaculture and oyster farming also well-developed, so the marine economy has suffered significant losses.
