日本历史上最初的敕撰和歌集《古今和歌集》(以下略称为《古今集》,成书于905年,编者为纪贯之、纪友则、壬生中岑和凡河内躬恒四人,二十卷),给和歌文学以国家公认的地位,标志着日本国风文化的确立,被后世尊为王朝和歌的起点和国民性审美思想及思考样式的本源。并且,由《古今集》创立的敕撰和歌集的传统也一直被延续到第21部《新续古今和歌集》的完成(总称“二十一代集”)。
