As a colonial member of the Virginia House of Commons and a member of the first Virginia Communications Commission, a strong opponent of the stamp tax law, and a representative of the Continental Conference from 1774 to 1775, Patrick Henry (1736-1799) was in the growing North American revolutionary cause. A patriot pioneer. After the American Revolutionary War, he served as a Virginia legislator and several governors. His eloquence gave him a permanent reputation, and his heated speech at the Virginia Second State Assembly in St. John’s Church in Richmond on March 23, 1775 is still widely circulated today. The question faced by this legislature is whether to arm Virginia militias to fight Britain. Patrick Henry knew that it was time for the North American colonies to gather their forces into action.
