Objective: To study the correlation between high incidence of cancer and its superoxide dismutase in coking workers. Methods: A retrospective investigation was conducted on the death of malignant tumor in workers of a coking plant. The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the content of lipid peroxidation products in coking workers were measured. Results: The mortality rate of malignant tumors of workers in coking plant was higher than that of control group (P <0.01). The mortality rate of lung cancer in coking workers increased with the increase of working hours in this environment. The activity of superoxide dismutase in blood of coking workers was higher than that of the control group (P <0.01), and the content of lipid peroxidation products was similar between the two groups. Conclusion: The mortality rate of malignant tumor of coking workers is higher than that of control group due to the disorder of gene expression of bone marrow stem cells caused by long-term erosion of harmful substances in coal-fired flue gas.
