东北现代话剧的发展起步较晚,如果说中国现代话剧的发展是受惠于欧风美雨浸润的话,那么,东北话剧的发展就是“五四”以来中国话剧发展主流的“负迁移”。这种“负迁移”的产生主要是基于现代东北特殊的“异态时空”推动乡风民俗、原始生命强力等民间文化元素的注入,使得东北现代话剧在嬗变中植根于民间文化场域,拥有了自己独特的审美价值取向,呈现出与其他地域话剧不同的发展路向。
