Non-gonadotropins, in particular insulin, cortisol and thyroid hormones, have been found to affect in vitro growth and luteinization of human and animal layers of cells. Channing et al found that insulin, cortisol and thyroxine enhanced the morphological luteinization and progestin secretion by synergistic effect with luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) in cultured porcine granulosa cells. They also found that cortisol increased LH / HCG receptors in porcine stratum corneum cells exposed to FSH. Therefore, thyroid hormones seem to have a direct effect on the granulosa cells in vitro. This effect may be receptor mediated. According to the authors, there is no report on the presence of triiodothyronine (T_3) receptors in granulosa cells.
