Abstract ‘Lvyou No. 1’, bred in Huasheng Agriculture Limited Liability Company of Shandong Province, is a new cucumber F1 hybrid developed by crossing two inbred lines HS267014 and HS6201. It is an early-maturing variety with wide adaptability, high yield, and good commercial breeding. The plant has strong growth vigor and high resistance to white powder mildew. The first fruit sets on the 4th-5th section, and the fruiting ratio of cucumber is 60%-80%. The cylindrical fruit is about 30-35 cm in length, 3.2-3.5 cm in diameter with light green skin and glossy appearance. This plant has demonstrated adaptability in early-spring and late-autumn planting as well as spring and autumn tunnel planting.

  Breeding Process
According to the demand of the cucumber market in China, we have determined the objectives of cucumber breeding with high yield, strong resistance, good commercial quality, and wide adaptability. After 5 years carefully breeding, the excellent hybrid variety ‘Lvyou No. 1’ was bred. It is suitable for planting in early spring, late autumn and spring and autumn tunnel planting.
The female parent HS267014 was the cucumber breeding material selected from overseas imported varieties and separated through several generations. The cucumber variety is an early-maturing variety with strong disease resistance, adaptability and growth vigor. The plant has short internodes, small leaves of dark green color. The first female flower node is in the 2nd-3rd section. The fruits grow in heavy density, and the fruiting ratio is about 80-90%, showing good fruit-bearing capacity. Commercial cucumbers are short stick-shaped of dark green color with round and short end. The fruit is densely covered with thorns of even thickness, and it is about 25-28 cm long, promising with good commercial character.
The male parent HS6201 is a descendant of the strain selected from the crossbreeding of local breeds in Shandong province and foreign resource species. It has strong growth vigor. The leaves are of medium size in light color. The first female flower node is in the 6th-8th section. The variety has a fruiting ratio of 30%. Enlarging quickly, the fruit is long stick-shaped of light green color with glossy appearance and few thorns, promising with good commercial character.
In 2013, a superiority combination was selected from the 298 combinations bred with the selfing line HS267014 as the female parent and the selfing line HS6201 as the male parent, named ‘Lvyou No.1’. In the early spring greenhouse experiment in 2014, the yield of the variety was 10.7% higher than that of the control, ‘Zhongnong 26’. In the delayed greenhouse experiment in the autumn of 2014, the yield was 11.2% higher than that of the control ‘Zhongnong 26’. In the spring and autumn open field experiment in 2015, the yield was 10.3% higher than that of ‘Zhongnong 26’. Breeding Results
  Variety yield comparison test
From 2014 to 2015, variety comparison tests were carried out between ‘Lvyou No.1’ and the control ‘Zhongnong 26’ in Qingzhou, Jiyang, Liaocheng, and Shouguang, respectively. The basic trend of the two-year comparative tests was consistent. As shown in Table 1, the yield increase of ‘Lvyou No.1’ was 8.2%-11.8%, with an average increase of 10.7%, and the average yield increased by 10.2% for the early stage. The results showed that the medium-stage yield and total yield of ‘Lvyou No.1’ were significantly higher than those of the control, ‘Zhongnong 26’.
  Production demonstration and popularization
In 2015, production demonstration test was carried out to the cucumber variety ‘Lvyou No. 1’ in the spring and autumn protected areas in Jiyang, Liaocheng and Shouguang. The demonstration area was 6 000 m2. The comparison results showed that ‘Lvyou No. 1’ had a higher yield and better commercial quality than ‘Zhongnong 26’. It had an average yield of approximately 17 753 kg per 667 m2, which was 10.7% higher than that of ‘Zhongnong 26’ (Table 2). At present, ‘Lvyou No. 1’ has been promoted to large areas in Shandong and Jiangsu provinces.
The cucumber variety ‘Lvyou No. 1’ was approved by farmers for its resistances to downy mildew, powdery mildew, angular leaf spot and virus disease in the process of the production demonstration test in the spring and autumn protected areas in Jiyang, Liaocheng and Shouguang cities (Table 3).
  Comparison of commodity traits
In 2015, a comparative test was carried out to the commodity traits of ‘Lvyou No.1’ and the control ‘Zhongnong 26’ at the test base of Shandong Huasheng Agriculture Co. Ltd. The results showed that ‘Lvyou No.1’ was better than the control ‘Zhongnong 26’ in the aspects of thorns, fruit appearance and luster (Table 4).
  Main Characteristics
‘Lvyou No. 1’ is an early-maturing variety with wide adaptability, high yield, and good commercial breeding. With strong vigor growth, the plant has thick stalk, small leaves in dark color and medium nodes. There are a lot of female flowers. The first fruit sets on the 4th-5th section, and the fruiting ratio of cucumber is 60%-80%. The cylindrical fruit is about 30-35 cm in length, 3.2-3.5 cm in diameter with light green skin, glossy appearance and few thorns. Tasting crisp, the green fruit is delicious. The plant has strong disease resistance, high resistance to downy mildew and powdery mildew (Table 4). This plant has demonstrated adaptability in early-spring and late-autumn planting as well as spring and autumn tunnel planting. Cultivation Techniques
The cucumber variety ‘Lvyou No. 1’ is suitable for planting in spring and autumn protected areas, and the sowing time can be determined according to the harvesting period. Using seedling transplantation, plants can be planted with one leaf. The plants are generally planted with the large row spacing of 60-70 cm, small row spacing of 50-60 cm, and plant spacing of 30 cm. Before planting, 2 200 kg of organic fertilizer can be applied as the base fertilizer, followed by deep-leveling to fully mix the soil and fertilizer. The plants can be planted with or without ridges in the tunnel, depending on the local planting pattern. During harvesting, it is necessary to maintain proper temperature and maintain large amounts of water. Additionally, during the process of cucumber growth, attention should be paid to the prevention and control of diseases such as virus diseases, powdery mildew, gray mold, aphids, and whitefly.
