A joint commission of Spain and Morocco has been studying the construction of a permanent corridor across the Strait of Gibraltar. The committee has decided that the railway tunnel program is the most viable. The earthquake study, which began in 1980, has ended, and the study cost 150 million pesetas. It is planned to excavate two parallel monorail tunnels and a smaller auxiliary tunnel, and may also lay pipe in small tunnels
