Stem cells have the potential to self-renew and differentiate and play an important role in tissue development, regeneration and repair. Stem cells maintain a balance between self-renewal and differentiation through symmetrical and asymmetric division. Once precision control of symmetrical and asymmetric division is disrupted, it not only leads to changes in the number of stem cells, but also may promote tumorigenesis. Therefore, to clarify the regulatory mechanism of stem cell symmetry and asymmetric division is very important for understanding the occurrence and development of tumors and finding new ways to treat tumors. This article reviews the progress of asymmetric stem cell division in mammalian development and tumorigenesis and development.
