Objective To investigate the relationship between atherosclerotic lesions of lower extremities and serum ferritin level in type 2 diabetic patients. Methods Fifty-eight patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) were enrolled in this study. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated with atherosclerosis of the lower extremities were selected as the observation group (n = 26). Patients with normal lower extremity arteries were selected as the control group (n = 32). The level of serum ferritin was compared between two groups. Results The level of serum ferritin in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P <0.05), and the level of serum ferritin was positively correlated with the level of HbA1c in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus An independent risk factor for atherosclerosis. Conclusions Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and lower extremity atherosclerosis are associated with the serum ferritin level in patients.
