Objective To investigate the correlation between the changes of some trace elements in multiple sclerosis (MS) serum and its pathogenesis in the plateau environment. Methods The levels of 5 trace elements such as Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn and Al in 19 MS patients were determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. Results The levels of serum Mn and Al in MS patients were significantly higher than those in normal controls, while the contents of Cu were lower. Zn and Fe did not change significantly. Conclusion The changes of trace elements may be related to the pathogenesis of MS.
