The azimuthal P-wave AVO response can theoretically reflect the direction of the open fracture and is proposed as a geophysical means of detecting the direction of fracture development in fractured reservoirs. To test the effectiveness of this method, a field experiment was recently conducted on a fractured reservoir in the Barinas Basin, Venezuela. The data for the three lines used for the experiment were collected in three different directions using a three-component detector. Before the test, the distribution of fractures in this reservoir has been obtained using the shear-wave splitting method. The data are from the P-S converted wave in the same data set. This experiment is to find out whether P-wave AVO responses from different directions can provide the same information. The results of the experiment further confirm the earlier results obtained with P-S converted waves. This example confirms the great potential of P waves in detecting cracks.
