长久以来,对杨逵小说是有争议的,其思想性得到人们的推崇,而对它的艺术性则多有微词,似乎杨逵文学的不朽地位全是由其作品所表现的“非文学”意义而建立起来的。然而,正是由于杨逵用他的小说形象化地反映了社会的真实,才能使它们具有“别样的吸引力”、“真情直逼人心”的力量。同时,杨逵小说人物形象的塑造毫无矫揉造作,完全是放在社会生活的实践中加以刻画。正因为如此,人物性格随着生活的改变、认识的加深而有所发展变化,人物形象就不是平面的而是立体的。杨逵小说基本上继承了中国传统小说的表现方法,但他并不墨守成规,而是能够借鉴和吸收中外现代文学的滋养,尤其注重以多种手法来丰富现实主义创作。
