Echoes in Yunnan: A Report of the 8th
China Golden Bell Awards for Music -
Chorus Competition
On the evening of June 22, 2011, the Chorus Competition of the 8th China ″Golden Bell″ Awards for Music, which has been attracting immense attention from the whole society, concluded in the gala show entitled ″Songs for the Party″ at the Kunming New Asia Sports City's Stadium. This highest national chorus competition started on June 17 in conjunction with the 2nd China Nie Er Music Week (Chorus), and has since then presented a series of choral concerts of high quality to the people of Kunming, also known as the City of Spring, and the live-televised shows broadcast nationwide displayed to all chorus lovers and singers across the country the latest development of the rapidly growing chorus cause in China.
After four days' severe contest, the final results of the competition were announced by the jury. Among the finalists, the Shenzhen Musicians' Association Choir, the Hangzhou Normal University ″Eight Seconds″ Mixed Choir and the Yunnan Arts College's Youth Choir won the gold prizes, three choirs including the Dalian Arts College's Male Choir won the silver prizes, and another three ones including the Kunming Arts Occupational College's Nie Er Choir won the bronze prizes. Other ten groups including the Henan University Arts College's Students Choir were awarded by the Competition Organizing Committee the Prizes of Excellent Performance.
As part of the efforts to provide the general public easier access to the Golden Bell Award shows, the organizers placed many shows in open-air squares, which became the local citizens' favourites. On the afternoon of June 21, a total of 39 participating groups, which had finished their participation in the competition, came to the Biji Square of Xishan District, the Pedestrian Square on Nanping Street of Wuhua District, the Taoyuan Square of Panlong District and the Guangdu Square of Guangdu District respectively to present to the local citizens of Kunming open shows of chorus singing, which turned out to be a feast of music for everyone.
The Gala Concert on June 22 enjoyed great attention from both the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the Yunnan Provincial Government. Local ethnic elements of the ″Seven-Colour″ Yunnan were found almost everywhere in the whole event, from the opening piece ″Joyful Reunion″, to the songs in praise of the Party, and even to the grand awarding ceremony at the end.
All the 39 participating groups, together with many invited performing groups on the spot, sang jointly such grand and impressive songs as ″The Heavenly Road″, ″Graduation Song″, ″The River Flows Eastward″ and ″Deng Xiaoping the Immortal″ under the baton of Xu Peidong, Xu Xiyi and Zheng Jian. The entire hall was filled with beautiful and harmonious voices in singing the praises of our motherland and exhibiting the great power of the Chinese people to revitalize our nation in joint efforts.
