“意思”,是精神的和形而上的所在,是艺术的生命。有怎样的“言”,就有怎样的“意思”。艺术的精神是写“意”的,“意”是根本。“思”,使“意”的产生与实现成为可能,使“意”有所寄寓,使客观的世界在主观的心性里运动起来。在“缘情说”、“性灵说”、“风骨说”、“性情说”、“情灵说”、“辨味说”、“兴趣说”、“神韵说”、“境界说”之后,提出“意思说”,它虽虚但实,似含混但清楚;而“有意思”与“无意思”的概括,最简捷也最直接、最有效。
