1981年10月2日,国际奥委会在巴登召开的第80次会议,一致同意接纳何振梁为国际奥委会委员。 这时国际奥委会自1894年成立已走过87年的里程; 这时新中国几经曲折,恢复其在五环大家庭合法席位仅两年。 何振梁,带着中国人民和中国体育界的重托,带着让五环认识五星的职责,开始了他在国际奥委会中的奋斗。 当时萨马兰奇主席高兴地把他自己的一枚五环制质别针别在何振梁的衣襟上,握住地的手说:
