蔡元培与章太炎是浙江近代文化名人中的一对双子星座,两人一生行事多有交集,思想各有异同。本文以史料为据,对章、蔡二人的家庭背景、教育经历等方面的异同作了分析,探讨了两人在维新运动期间的交集与互动,并对两人从维新走向革命的思想轨迹作了比较分析。文章提出,在晚清时期从维新走向革命的潮流中,蔡元培和章太炎是知识界两个最有代表性的人物。他们的殊途同归,既不无浙江地域文化因素的影响,更是共和思想在新知识界逐渐成为主流的表现。这是近代中国走向共和、建立民国的思想基础,也是今人比较研究中国近现代历史人物思想异同的价值基点。
