This paper first introduces various definitions of observability of nonlinear systems, discusses the background of these definitions, describes the research results under various definitions, points out the unsolved problems, and introduces the concept of Morse-Smale systems Sex. Secondly, five methods for designing state observers in nonlinear systems are described, and the assumptions and design steps of various methods are introduced in detail.
