回顾历史,工笔画与绘画同生。最古的岩画、彩陶图纹都施重彩,力求规整;间有粗疏,是力所未能,与后世写意全异,是历史局限。因其时纸笔尚未发明,水墨写意是在工笔画高度发展后超脱出来的,大约在唐代中期,至宋元而盛。轻工重写、轻彩重墨,与文人画家的鼓吹有关。工写、疏密二体,也是唐代始分。早期工笔画都属人物题材,山水、花鸟都是在唐代由人物画配景而独立成科的。唐以前工笔人物画一直占主体地位,至宋而大备、形成人物、山水、花鸟、工笔、写意、白描、水墨、重彩……百花齐放的局面。
