15世纪后期,正值日本的室町幕府时代(1336—1573年)。自从嘉吉元年(1441年)第六代将军足利义教被大名赤松满佑暗杀后,政局就变得动荡不安,国内一直笼罩在战争的阴云之中。不久,足利将军家因继嗣问题发生了内乱,同时又与诸大名间的恩怨相互纠葛,人们强烈地预感到,一场史无前例的灾难即将到来。就在此时,一首谶纬诗流传于大街小巷。正如历史上多次重复的那样,每当发生重大的政治变动,社会上就会流传起各种谣谶。这次的谣谶名为《野马台诗》,据说是一首预言了日本历史的谶纬诗。全诗是这样写的:
The late 15th century coincided with Japan’s Muromachi Shogunate era (1336-1573). The political situation has become turbulent since the Sixth Gen. Ashikaga Yoshinaga was assassinated in the first year of Cargill in 1441 (1441) and the country has been shrouded in dark clouds of war. Soon, General Ashikaga’s civil war broke out on the heels of the heirs and at the same time entangled with the grudges among the great names, it was strongly predicted that an unprecedented catastrophe was imminent. At this moment, a sutra poem is circulating in the streets. As repeatedly in history, various rumors have been circulating in the community whenever major political changes have taken place. This rumor is titled “Mustang poem” and is said to be a foreshadowing poem predicting the history of Japan. The poem is written like this:
