A hybrid speech coding technology is introduced that combines a frequency-domain parametric encoder (for smooth, dull and clear voice) and a time-domain waveform encoder (for transitional speech). Subjective listening tests demonstrate that this 4kbit / s hybrid encoding scheme is comparable in quality to a low-rate CELP encoder.
