白斑狗鱼主要分布在新疆阿勒泰地区额尔齐斯河流域。白斑狗鱼是肉食性的凶猛鱼类,食物为鱼类、蛙类、水鸟等,有时也吃同种鱼类。成鱼可以吞食占其体重10%～20%的本种小鱼,还可以吞入有它体长1/2～1/3的其他鱼类。白斑狗鱼生长很快,当年小鱼可长到80～100克,第二年可长到400～600克。白斑狗鱼体大肉厚,肉质坚实、洁白、味美,是熘炒鱼片、烤鱼、做鱼丸、包饺子的上佳原料。在额尔齐斯河垂钓的白斑狗鱼以0.5～2.5千克为主,有时也能碰到五六千克的白斑狗鱼。白斑狗鱼属冷水性鱼,利用它冬季也进食的特点,可以凿冰洞垂钓。
