Polygonatum falcutum is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine for treating diabetes and is used as a medicinal material of Polygonati Rhizoma in Japan. The authors studied the hypoglycemic effect of methanol extract from rhizome and its mechanism. The experimental hyperglycemic rats had a significant decrease in blood glucose levels after an intraperitoneal injection of 800 mg/kg of OM of methanol extract (OM) for 4 hours, whereas the 200 mg/kg dose had no significant effect.
