A few years before the “July 7 Incident” in 1937, the two liberal intellectuals such as Hu Shih and VV Vladimir exchanged opinions on many occasions on how to improve Sino-Japanese relations. Both sides emphasized the importance of understanding and telling the truth and there is no lack of consensus on how to understand the crux of the Sino-Japanese relations and how to improve the relations between the two countries. This discussion caused a different response at the time. However, both of them showed obvious ideological flaws in the dialogue. For example, Hu Shih’s weakness and pessimistic attitude were greatly influenced by the prevailing thoughts in Japanese society at that time.
