Disparate Southern and Northern Historically, the entire Sudan has been profoundly affected by Arab cultures and religions. The combination of Arab culture imported from Egypt and the Red Sea with the local African culture has made the Sudan a unique Arab-African country with a predominantly Arabian culture. However, in the south of Sudan, this process of Arabization has been hampered by the British colonial rule over the past 60 years.
