What role the Communist International played during the second KMT-CPC cooperation was a long-debated topic. The further opening up of China has provided new information for the convergence of views on Sino-Soviet relations during this period. These materials provide a clearer and more complete picture of the complex activities that have taken place over the year preceding the Xi’an Incident and come up with new ideas that have been highlighted as the reason for the second Kuomintang-Communist cooperation. In June 1936 Mao Zedong mentioned to Edgar Snow that by the end of 1935 the Kuomintang and the Communist Party had tentative dialogues. Later, Chiang Kai-shek also mentioned the matter. According to new sources, the substantive talks between the Kuomintang and the Communist party took place in August 1935, but significant progress was not made until August of the following year. The Soviet Union played a key role. In other words, the Xi’an Incident occurred in the KMT-CPC talks initiated by the Soviet Union.
