【Abstract】Falling in love with your lovers, it might be like living in the heaven. But when you find your lover is not the person you thinking of, it may be like falling down to the hell. James Joyce is a great writer who is always expert in writing the inside of the characters. His writing is always full of images of impressionism and epiphany. Impressionism is through the character’s instant impression, especially the feelings of seeing light, shadow and color, present the individual activities in the field of emotional hazy.
【Key words】Araby; waking up; growing up
In Araby, when the author describes the psychology of love of the main character, he doesn’t write down the emotional activities, but describes the seeing and the listening. The readers were taken into the main character’s emotional world.
“While she spoke she turned a silver bracelet round and round her wrist. She could not go, she said, because there would be a retreat that week in her convent. Her brother and two other boys were fighting for their caps and I was alone at the railing. She held one of the spikes, bowing her head towards me. The light from the lamp opposite our door caught the white curve of her neck, lit up her hair that rested there and, falling, lit up the hand upon the railing. It fell over one side of her dress and caught the white border of a petticoat, just visible as she stood at ease.”(610)
On hearingthe name of Araby, the boys talks with that woman first time.Joyce describes the boy’s impression of seeing the shadow and thelight. There is a beautiful picture in front of us. The girl is so beautiful. The boy loves her so much. We can even find out the movement of boy’s sightline. It’s the mirror of the inner of the boy. It reflects the romantic emotion and the wishes of falling in love. Although he doesn’t say any words, his emotional activities is showed us just like a directed and clear picture. We know that, only people falling in love meeting his or her lover and the romantic person can leave this kind of impression. With the momentary enjoying feeling, Joyce chooses the special moment as the first showing of Araby. The first love of a boy is showed to us. Thus, the author treats the Araby as thehopeful and romantic place. No passionate or praised words, no any metaphor, only appearing light, shadow and color, everything is plain, but everything is true. Through describing the impression of the main character, James takes us into the inside of the main character. Also, the boy is going to the heaven that he images.
At the end of Araby, the author uses epiphany to describe the complicated inside of the boy. He knows who he is in the heart of that girl immediately.
“—Oh, I never said such a thing!
—O, but you did!
—O, but I didn‘t.
—Didn’t she say that?
—Yes, I heard her.
—O,There’s a …… fib.” (612)
When the boy arrives at Araby, he hears someone said something. A young lady and two men were talking with each other.Maybe they play jokes, but the bad impression leaves in the boy’s mind.
“I lingered before her stall, though I knew my stay was useless, to make my interest in her wares seem the more real. Then I turned away slowly and walked down the middle of the bazaar. I allowed the two pennies to fall against the six pence in my pocket. I heard a voice call from one end of the gallery that the light was out. The upper part of the hall was now completely dark.”(612)
In contrast of the feeling of going to Araby, the boy’s activities become very slow. From his slow activities, neglecting the noise of coins and so on, through the objective describing, we can feel that the boy is so depressed. At that moment, the boy gets his difficulty clearly. Before it, he didn’t aware of his surroundings and wanted to seek romance. Also, at the moment, the boy is from the heaven to the hell. Suddenly, he understood it. What he heard makes some sudden understanding, because of the symbolic meaning. The Araby, once he thought perfect for his hope, in fact, is a dull and dark bazaar. The vulgar lady is really a big kidding for his romance. He understood the reality, he got “epiphany”: it’s impossible to realize his ideal in the gloomy society. The way the boy seeks romantic love, in fact, is the mind journey which the boy understands himself. With using “epiphany”, Joyce not only shows us the subtle psychological changes of the boy, but also means no one can break away from the disabled shadow, even a lovely boy. The boy goes into the hell, it is the truth, but it doesn’t mean that it’s bad for him. He understands himself clearly and sees the society clearly. He grew upand learnt a lot of things. He didn’t go to the heaven, but to the hell.Fortunately, he woke up ultimately.
