Nitric oxide (NO) is a free radical gas synthesized from L-arginine (L-Arg) and molecular oxygen catalyzed by NO synthase (NOS), which is widely found in body tissues. Internal environment, can relax blood vessels, regulate vascular tone, inhibit platelet adhesion and aggregation, regulating leukocyte activation. Recent studies have shown that NO still inhibits neointimal formation (NIF) induced by vascular injury, whereas proliferation, migration and phenotypic turnover of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) play an important role in NIF. The authors review the impact of NO on the function of VSMCs during NIF.
