The standard formula for calculating the bin size is basically based on the assumption of constant velocity. We extend the calculation of the bin size and related parameters to a medium characterized by the linear velocity function v (z). We provide several design equations that are accurate for all inclinations (including over 90 °). Under the constraint of constant velocity, these equations are reduced to the known form. The variable-speed bin is larger than the conventional method, while the offset distance and travel time are smaller than those calculated by conventional methods. Due to the paramount importance of bin size to the cost of acquisition and handling, cost-effective 3-D seismic exploration can be devised.
