Although these are not the best ways to solve the problem, they are unique ways to save themselves. All of these also prove that ordinary Americans of that era can not control their own destiny. By analyzing John Steinbeck’s characters in “Man and the Rat” and their dreams, this article reveals the American Dream in the background of the economic crisis and spiritual crisis in the 20th century
