文人画作为中国封建社会中文人士大夫特定的绘画名称,最早源自宋代苏轼提出的“士人画”概念,而其真正创始人当推唐代王维。但王维作为文人画创始人的地位,并不是在唐代形成的,而是由宋代苏轼倡导起来的。苏轼曾这样评价王维:“味摩诘之诗,诗中有画;观摩诘之画,画中有诗。”诗中有画境,画中有诗意,王维画中那种“空灵”与“超脱”的诗般的境界,正是“士人画”所追求的极致境界,也是后世文人画所追求的最高境界。
