当人类还处在原始公社的时代,就会对於周围的形形色色的物质,感到惊异,可能发出一些疑问。例如说:这些物质是那里来的?那几种是基本的?无数种类的物质是不是由几种基本物质变来的?一个具体的物,如果不断分割下去,是不是有一定的限度呢?还是能够无限地分割下去?诸如此类的疑问,在彼时,当然仅仅是朦胧地、含浑地、偶然地发生着,今天已没有纪载可以寻找到。可是就从原始宗教的产生来看,我们溯本寻源,可以归之於原始人类对於这一类问题的直觉性的答复。凡是研究宗教发展史的人,基本上都应同意这一种意见。原始时代的人类,对於这一类有关物质的问题,
