The first round of screening of the National Lung Cancer Screening Test (NLST) published online by the New England Journal of Medicine showed that screening for lung cancer annually by CT scans may reduce lung cancer mortality in older Americans who used to smoke heavily, This result was released at the 2013 American Thoracic Society (ATS). According to Dr. Timothy R. Church of the Department of Environmental Hygiene at the School of Public Health, University of Minnesota, small-dose spiral CT can be performed annually over a three-year period compared to conventional chest X-ray
