Up to one-third of the beds in hospitals are often occupied by long-term rehabilitation or waiting for arrangements, following the family or waiting for the social welfare department to provide protection. According to unofficial literature, the number of beds occupied by these patients has decreased since the introduction of Community Medical Assistance (CCA) in 1993. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the implementation of the CCA had any effect on the bed turnover in the rehabilitation department. Materials and Methods Patients who had been discharged from the Rehabilitation Unit of University Hospital, Southampton, United Kingdom, from April 1, 1992 to March 31, 1994 were investigated. The authors compared hospitalization waiting time before and after the implementation of CCA for 12 months. The waiting time means that the patient has been functionally satisfied or considered to be suitable for home care.
