疫苗保护率是最终核算疫苗现场效果的主要指标,也是估计总体疫苗效果的一个参量。可是,这样一个重要的关键指标却没有规定它的标准差和标准误,不能从样本保护率推论总体的可信限,也无法比较两样本保护率的显著差异和合理计算疫苗接种人数等,因而妨碍了科学考察疫苗效果的进展。作者认为,这是由于现行疫苗保护率使用的概念及概念公式的不合理,现行疫苗保护率的概念是表示降低发病率的百分比率,其概念公式为:
