On August 31, 1870, she was born in a family of aristocrats in Italy. Her father was a famous soldier. Her mother was a learned Catholic and she was well educated in her childhood. At the age of 20, she had a great interest in medicine, but in the conservative European society of the time girls were considered absurdly ill and her interest was also strongly opposed by her parents. She broke through the heavy resistance and finally became the only female student at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rome. At the age of 26, she obtained a doctor’s degree in medicine from the University of Rome, becoming the first woman in Italy
