In the evolutionary course of more than one hundred years, China’s modern design gradually shows the unique appearance of national personality and the characteristics of the times. However, no matter what changes, images, languages and forms are not the core purport of their pursuit. To solve people’s life needs in different times, dealing with the relationship between people and the environment at different levels is the responsibility of designing never to be abandoned. The two articles published in this issue respectively discuss the relationship between design and daily necessities of life from the perspective of history and theory. Zhou Aimin used delicate ink and brush to outline the early stage of the rise of modern Chinese design in Shanghai. Chen Anying explained the constructive significance of pan-design criticism from the perspective of visual culture research. I believe both languages can provide some help for our reflection on the value of contemporary design.
