二、完形填空(共20小题;每小题1分,满分20分)
One day in early December, we woke up to discover a heavy fall of snow. “Mom, can we go 16 after breakfast?” my elevenyearold daughter Erica begged. I didnt want to 17 her request, so we headed towards the only 18 in our town.
When we arrived, the hill was crowded with people. We found an open spot next to a thin man and his threeyearold son. The boy was already lying in the sled (雪橇), 19 to be launched. “Come on, Daddy!” he called.
The man looked over at me. “Okay if we go 20 ?” he asked.
“Sure. Looks like your son is ready to go,” I said. With that, he gave the boy a huge 21 , and off he flew! And the father ran after his son at full speed.
“He must be afraid that his son is going to 22 somebody,” I said to Erica. “Wed better be 23 , too.”
Then we also skied down the hill at a great speed. As we returned to the top, I noticed that the man was 24 his son, who was still lying in the sled, back up to the summit. When we reached the top, the boy was ready to play again. Again, the father 25 him down the hill, and then pulled both the boy and the sled back up. The little boy was terribly spoilt by his father, I thought. 26 he was small, the child could pull his own sled up the hill once in a while. This 27 went on for more than an hour, but the man never 28 , and he was very happy instead. Finally, I could 29 it no longer. I called to him, “You have tremendous 30 !”
The man smiled and said, “He has cerebral palsy (腦瘫). He cant walk.”
I was dumbstruck (惊呆的). It had all seemed so happy, so 31 , that it never occurred to me that the child might be 32 . Although I didnt know the mans name, I told the 33 in my newspaper column. Just how bad was it?The neighbors came out of their houses to see if we had a gas leak!
Determined, Dad filled our plates with steaming stew and passed them around. It didnt look that bad, and after the first wave had shut down my ability to smell, it didnt offend the nose so much, either. I took a taste. It would never win a prize in a cooking competition, but it was surprisingly edible, and we drank up every last drop of soup!

With all the wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, its not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humor just to help us get through each and every day of our lives. Putting a smile on someones face when you know they are feeling down in the dumps, makes me feel good and warms my heart.
How would you feel if you could not joke around with your wife, husband, children, coworkers, neighbors, close friends, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your corner store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I dont know the person Im joking around with. My grandma always found humor in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is common courtesy(禮貌)to speak to others that are around you.
I know of a few people that dont have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their face. They dont get the joke that makes others laugh. I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke? Laughing is essential to keep your stress levels under control. Without humor we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness in this present world. It drives people crazy. We all need to find a way to ignore the sadness and bring a little light into our lives. So, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together.
40. According to the author, humor is useful in the aspect that .
A. it makes people more confident
B. it can pick up peoples spirits
C. it can help get rid of the cruelty in the world
D. it can help people get on well with others
41. From the second paragraph, we can know that .
A. the writer is funny and polite
B. family members should play tricks on each other
C. the writers grandma is humorous
D. we should relieve stress in any situation
42. The phrase “busting a gut” in the third paragraph can be replaced by “ ”.
A. explaining carefully B. speaking loud
C. keeping silent D. laughing hard
43. In writing the passage, the author mainly intends to .
A. encourage people to be humorous in daily life
B. talk about his own understanding of humor
C. introduce a practical way to get through daily life
D. convince people of the power of being optimistic about life

For a while, my neighborhood was taken over by an army of joggers(慢跑者).They were there all the time: early morning, noon, and evening. There were little old ladies in gray sweats, young couples in Adidas shoes, middleaged men with red faces. “Come on!” My friend Alex encouraged me to join him as he jogged by my house every evening. “Youll feel great.”
Well, I had nothing against feeling great and if Alex could jog every day, anyone could. So I took up jogging seriously and gave it a good two months of my life, and not a day more. Based on my experience, jogging is the most overvalued form of exercise around, and judging from the number of the people who left our neighborhood jogging army, Im not alone in my opinion.
First of all, jogging is very hard on the body. Your legs and feet take a real pounding(重擊)running down a road for two or three miles. I developed foot, leg, and back problems. Then I read about a nationally famous jogger who died of a heart attack while jogging, and I had something else to worry about. Jogging doesnt kill hundreds of people, but if you have any physical weaknesses, jogging will surely bring them out, as they did with me. Secondly, I got no enjoyment out of jogging. Putting one foot in front of the other for fortyfive minutes isnt my idea of fun. Jogging is also a lonely pastime. Some joggers say, “I love being out there with just my thoughts.” Well, my thoughts began to bore me, and most of them were on how much my legs hurt.
And how could I enjoy something that brought me pain? And that wasnt just the first week;it was practically every day for two months. I never got past the pain level, and pain isnt fun. What a cruel way to do it! So many other exercises, including walking, lead to almost the same results painlessly, so why jog?
I dont jog any more, and I dont think I ever will. Im walking two miles three times a week at a fast pace, and that feels good. I bicycle to work when the weather is good. Im getting exercise, and Im enjoying it at the same time. I could never say the same for jogging, and Ive found a lot of better ways to stay in shape.
44. The underlined word “them”(Paragraph 3) most probably refers to “ ”.
A. heart attacks B. back problems
C. famous joggers D. physical weaknesses
45. What was the writers attitude towards jogging in the beginning?
A. He felt it was worth a try.
B. He was very fond of it.
C. He was strongly against it.
D. He thought it must be painful.
46. Why did the writer give up jogging two months later?
A. He disliked doing exercise outside.
B. He found it neither healthy nor interesting.
C. He was afraid of having a heart attack.
D. He was worried about being left alone.
47. From the writers experience, we can conclude that .
A. not everyone enjoys jogging
B. he is the only person who hates jogging
C. nothing other than jogging can help people keep fit
D. jogging makes people feel greater than any other sport

My old digital camera broke down, so I wanted to buy a new one. Being the cautious type, I fancied a reliable brand. So I went on the Net, spent 15 minutes reading product reviews on good websites, wrote down the names of three top recommendations and headed for my nearest big friendly camera store. There in the cupboard was one of the cameras on my list. And it was on special offer. Oh joy. I pointed at it and asked an assistant, “Can I have one of those?” He looked perturbed (不安). “Do you want to try it first?” he said. It didn t quite sound like a question. “Do I need to?” I replied, “Theres nothing wrong with it.” This made him look a bit offended and I started to feel bad. “No, no. But you should try it,” he said encouragingly, “Compare it with the others.” I looked across at the others: shelves of similar cameras placed along the wall, offering a wide range of slightly different prices and discounts, with each company selling a range of models based around the same basic box. With so many models to choose from, it seemed that I would have to spend hours weighing X against Y, always trying to take Z and possibly H into account at the same time. But when I had finished, I would still have only the same two certainties that I had entered the store with: first, soon after I carried my new camera out of the shop, it would be worth half what I paid for it; and second, my wonderful camera would very quickly be replaced by a new model.
But something in the human soul whispers that you can beat these traps by making the right choice, the clever choice, the wise choice. In the end, I agreed to try the model I had chosen. The assistant seemed a sincere man. So I let him take out my chosen camera from the cupboard, show how it took excellent pictures of my fellow shoppers...and when he started to introduce the special features, I interrupted to ask whether I needed to buy a carrycase and a memory card as well. Why do we think that new options still offer us anything new? Perhaps it is because they offer an opportunity to avoid facing the fact that our real choices in this culture are far more limited than we would like to imagine.
48. The shop assistant insisted that the writer should .
A. trust him and stop asking questions
B. try the camera to see if there was anything wrong with it
C. get more information about different companies
D. compare the camera he had chosen with the others
49. What does the writer mean by “it would be worth half what I paid for it”(Paragraph 2)?
A. He should get a 50% discount.
B. The price of the camera would soon fall.
C. The quality of the camera was not good.
D. The price of the camera was unreasonably high.
50. The writer decided to try the model he had chosen because he .
A. knew very little about it
B. wanted to make sure the one he chose would be the best
C. didnt trust the shop assistant
D. had a special interest in taking pictures of his fellow shoppers
