《义务教育数学课程标准(2011年版)》指出,数学教学活动是学生在教师的指导下主动地、富有个性的学习,要构建充满生命力的数学课堂教学运行体系。方程作为一类事物普遍适用的数学模型,在初等代数中占有重要地位。人教版数学教材在第二学段开始正式引入字母表示数和简易方程,这是学生数学学习的又一次抽象。对于小学生来说,初步建立代数的思想具有一定的挑战性。教材在五年级上册第五单元安排了“式与方程”的内容,具体编排体系为:
