Objective To investigate the significance of the microvessel density and the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in cervical squamous cell carcinoma in judging the biological behavior of cervical cancer and to provide a new evidence for prognosis evaluation and clinical treatment of cervical cancer. Methods The expression of microvessel density and VEGF protein in cervical cancer tissues were detected by immunohistochemical SP method. The relationship between them and tumor histological grade, clinical stage and their relationship with each other was analyzed. Results The microvessel density and the expression of VEGF in cervical squamous cell carcinoma were not correlated with the tumor grade and clinical stage. The microvessel density in VEGF positive group was significantly higher than that in negative group (P <0.01). The survival rate of the microvessel density group was lower than that of the microvessel density group (P <0.01). The VEGF expression had no significant effect on the survival rate (P> 0.05). Conclusions The microvessel density of VEGF positive group is higher than that of negative group, indicating that VEGF can promote the formation of cervical squamous cell carcinoma. Cancer microvessel density and prognosis, suggesting that the assessment of tumor microvascular may be a new means of predicting the prognosis of cervical squamous cell carcinoma
