In this study, sensitive fluorescence spectrophotometry was used to indirectly reflect the level of nitric oxide (NO) by detecting the content of nitrite (NO-2) in oral saliva of orthodontic patients. The results showed that the content of NO in saliva of healthy adolescent group was no significant difference (P> 0.05), while the content of NO in orthodontic treatment group was significantly higher than that of healthy group (P <0.01) No significant difference in healthy population (P> 0.05). In the first and second weeks of treatment, the NO content in saliva was the highest, and the third, fourth and fifth weeks were also significantly higher than those before treatment. There was no significant difference between the fixed appliance group and the active appliance group (P> 0 .05). This study revealed the intrinsic relationship between orthodontic treatment and changes in NO content in saliva. NO in saliva may play a role in bactericidal protection, maintenance of oral mucosal integrity, and involvement in orthodontic periodontal tissue remodeling.
