According to the traditional trade history theory, since the mid-19th century Japan and other Asian countries or regions have always been in a subordinate position in the world economic system due to the underdeveloped capitalist economy. However, the Japanese economic historian Sugimoto passed the study of Asia as a whole object and put forward the theory of “intra-Asian trade” that has considerable influence in academia. He pointed out that there is a unique trade structure in Asia. The core content of the “cotton axis system” is dominated by merchants and developed through the formation of Asian-based commodity chains. Therefore, this is an intra-regional trade that has gained relative autonomy from Europe and the United States and shows its own development logic. The purpose of this article is to comment on the theoretical connotation of the theory of “intra-Asia trade” and to explore its practical significance to China’s economic development today.
