佛像的创制和偶像崇拜的形成,开启了佛教美术的新局面。佛像诞生后,三大系统的造像种类呈各自发展的趋势:秣菟罗和阿玛拉瓦蒂形成了以释迦为主尊的崇拜形式,各类菩萨像显得匮乏,也直接影响了后来的笈多佛像的种类;犍陀罗的佛像种类则较为多样,除了以佛像、菩萨像为首的尊像外,还出现了用佛、菩萨、天人、供养人等元素构成的图像组合。佛像发展历经贵霜和笈多朝,波罗时期,佛教密教化,佛像迅速趋同印度教,转向密宗系统了。
