为了对付粤方,重返权力中枢,第二次下野后的蒋介石不得不主动拉拢和推崇汪精卫,实行蒋汪合作。蒋汪合作不仅对解决一·二八事变起了重要作用,而且也使国民党权力中枢得以重新组合。一·二八淞沪抗战使蒋介石重新掌握军政大权,蒋汪合作亦由“汪为首蒋为辅”逐渐转变为“蒋为首汪为辅”。
