作为指称个人德行或社会道德的一个词语,“谎言”在现代话语体系中使用广泛。然而人们为什么要说谎?人们可否说谎?说谎的目的又是什么?难道仅仅是生理的自然反应?诚然不是,人们说谎的理由自然是多种多样,有善意的,有恶意的……根据功利主义原则,在所有谎言的背后,我们可以看出人们说谎的真正意图都是为了获得他们想得到的最大幸福或者最大快乐,也或是最大限度地减少痛苦。这也就是说谎者的真正目的。所以,只要是遵循功利主义这一原则的谎言则是可以说的。
