Death is the eternal theme of Hemingway’s novels. Death is the greatest and most scary truth that mankind can never escape and can not surpass. In his view, everyone is always threatened by death, and everyone lives in the shadow of death. Therefore, life and death are an eternal theme that runs through his work. Through the analysis of his short stories, Hemingway’s exploration and understanding of life and death can be roughly divided into three stages: from the initial curiosity and daziness to the confusion and perplexity of the phenomena of life and death, finally reaching the realm of reason and aloofness . This article will respectively explain the reflection of these three stages in the corresponding short stories.
