Awakening is an important feminist work of the 19th century and a controversial novel. Kate Chopin expresses the intense desire of new women at that time to long for self-seeking and getting rid of the shackles by describing the awakening of actress Edna. The novel uses a great deal of symbolism and uses different images, such as land, sea, bird, house, etc. Through the implication of these images and the comparison of different images, the novel highlights the impact of the natural environment on the development of the fate of characters. In this paper, we use the prototype theory to analyze the important role of the natural environment in the process of Edna’s pursuit of self and reconstruction of the spiritual world by analyzing the image of “The Sea” in the novel.
